  • Vendor Support: Similar to COTS software, cobots also come with comprehensive vendor support that includes regular updates, repairs, and customer support.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Cobots are generally more cost-effective compared to traditional robots, particularly when used in small to medium-sized companies where high-volume tasks may not justify the cost of traditional robots.

Implementation of Collaborative Robotics

Just like any technological adoption, implementing cobots in a workspace requires careful planning and analysis. It begins with a thorough understanding of the organization’s specific needs, followed by selecting the right cobot model that aligns with those requirements. Cost-benefit analysis and vendor assessment are critical steps in the selection process. Once implemented, the deployment of cobots must be closely monitored to ensure they are operating as expected, and the training of staff must be carried out to ensure they are comfortable working alongside these robots.

  • Dependence on Vendors: Similar to COTS software, organizations rely heavily on cobot vendors for updates, repairs, and technical support, which can be a challenge when vendors discontinue certain models or go out of business.
  • Initial Investment: Despite being cost-effective in the long run, the initial investment for cobots can be high, especially for small businesses.
  • Security Risks: Like any connected device, cobots are also vulnerable to cyber-attacks, which poses a serious concern for companies.

In spite of these potential disadvantages, cobots are increasingly replacing traditional robots in various industries due to their cooperative and autonomous qualities.
