Christine Hurtsellers is a seasoned professional with an extensive career in the financial services industry. She has shaped her journey through a combination of education, skill, and dedication, leading her to her current role as the Chief Executive Officer of Voya Investment Management.
Educational Foundation
Christine’s academic foundation was built at Indiana University Bloomington, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Finance with high honors. Her time at the university included an enriching semester abroad in the Netherlands, where she focused on International Finance. This educational background laid the groundwork for her future endeavors in finance and investment management.
Early Career at Bank One
Her professional journey began at Bank One, where she served as a Senior Portfolio Manager from 1987 to 1997. During her tenure, she led the team in managing the bank’s securitized portfolios, including hedging activities, Treasuries, agency bonds, and municipal bonds. This role honed her skills in managing complex investment portfolios and set the stage for her subsequent positions.
Subsequent Roles and Expertise
Christine then joined AllianceBernstein as a Portfolio Manager, where she specialized in Collateralized Mortgage Obligations (CMOs) and pass-through management. Her expertise in mortgage derivatives and adjustable-rate mortgages further developed during her time at Freddie Mac, where she managed an impressive $650 billion retained portfolio.
Leadership at Voya Investment Management
In November 2004, Christine took on the role of Chief Investment Officer at Voya Investment Management. She directed the fixed income organization, overseeing more than 140 investors and various fixed income strategies. Her impressive leadership and strategic direction were recognized, and in September 2016, she was appointed as the CEO of Voya Investment Management. Under her leadership, the firm has managed to build a solid reputation as a top-25 manager of U.S. institutional and defined contribution assets, overseeing over $250 billion in assets.

Christine's contributions have not only propelled Voya Investment Management to new heights, but she has also been instrumental in earning the firm recognition as one of the "Best Places to Work in Money Management" by Pensions & Investments from 2015 through 2021. Her commitment to Voya’s core values of stewardship and service is evident in her focus on delivering superior risk-adjusted investment returns and cultivating a robust risk management framework.
Philanthropic Endeavors
In addition to her professional achievements, Christine is actively involved in philanthropy. She serves on the Southeast Regional Board of UNICEF USA and the Board of Counselors at The Carter Center, supporting initiatives in mental health and women's rights in emerging countries. Her dedication to social causes reflects her personal commitment to helping the weak and oppressed, particularly children.
