Introduction
Debra Lee is a renowned leader in the media and entertainment industries, celebrated for her efforts to promote diversity and inclusion. She was born and raised in the United States and pursued her higher education at some of the country's most prestigious institutions. Lee earned her Bachelor's Degree from Brown University. She then continued her studies at Harvard, where she obtained both a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a Doctor of Law (JD) from Harvard Law School.
Professional Journey
Lee's professional journey began at the law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where she worked as an associate from 1982 to 1986 in the Washington DC-Baltimore Area. Her exceptional skills and passion for the entertainment industry led her to BET Networks, where she embarked on a remarkable career.
Joining BET Networks in January 1986 as Vice President and General Counsel, Lee quickly climbed the corporate ladder. She served in various capacities, including President and General Counsel from 1996 to 1999, and President and Chief Operating Officer from 1999 to 2004. Her leadership abilities were later recognized with her appointment as CEO and Chairman of BET Networks in January 2005, a position she held until January 2018. During her tenure, she transformed BET into the largest global company dedicated to African-American programming, significantly increasing its reach to 100 million homes worldwide. Under her guidance, the network launched popular shows like "The New Edition Story," "The Game," and "Being Mary Jane."
Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives
