Douglas L. Peterson: A Seasoned Leader in Financial Services
Douglas L. Peterson is a seasoned leader in the financial services industry, currently serving as the President and CEO of S&P Global. His journey in finance began with a solid educational foundation, gaining a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and History from Claremont McKenna College, where he also spent a year studying abroad in Bogota, Colombia. He further honed his expertise by obtaining an MBA in International Finance and Management from The Wharton School.
Early Career: Chevron and Citibank
Peterson's early career started with Chevron as a research analyst, focusing on econometric modeling of global oil markets. This role paved the way for his extensive tenure at Citibank, lasting over 25 years. During his time at Citibank, Peterson held a variety of significant positions. He started as a Relationship Manager in both Buenos Aires and New York, where he managed client relationships during challenging economic conditions. He then transitioned to become the Country Corporate Officer for Costa Rica, launching the first foreign-owned bank in the country, followed by a similar role in Uruguay where he diversified the bank's platform and initiated a private pension fund.
As Chief Auditor, Peterson led Citibank's internal audit division, then went on to become CEO of Citigroup Japan, overseeing key acquisition and sale transactions. Subsequently, he served as Chief Operating Officer of Citibank, N.A., managing operations across 101 countries with assets worth $1.1 trillion.
Leadership at S&P Global
In 2011, Peterson joined S&P Global as President of Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services. Two years later, he ascended to the role of President and CEO of S&P Global. Under his leadership, he was instrumental in the rebranding of McGraw Hill Financial to S&P Global in 2016, reflecting a renewed focus and expansion in market data, analytics, and financial solutions.
Global Influence and Advocacy
Peterson's influence extends beyond his executive roles. He is actively involved with the World Economic Forum, serving as a steward and co-chair in various initiatives, particularly those focusing on long-term investing, infrastructure, and development. He is also a strong advocate for infrastructure spending and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing.
