Fernando’s academic journey began at Universidade Estadual de Campinas, where he completed his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from 1993 to 1997. Following this, he pursued an MBA at INSEAD, graduating in January 2003. These academic experiences laid a solid foundation for his analytical and strategic thinking skills, which would later become pivotal in his marketing career.
In terms of his professional achievements, Fernando has been recognized consistently for his contributions to marketing and creativity. He won the prestigious Adweek Grand Brand Genius Award twice, in 2013 and 2018, a testament to his pioneering work in brand development and advertising. His projects, such as Dove’s 'Real Beauty Sketches' during his tenure at Unilever, have received widespread acclaim for their creativity and impact.
Fernando Machado’s Career Path
Fernando’s career began with Unilever in 1996, where he started as an intern and gradually moved up the ranks over nearly two decades. His roles at Unilever included:
- Local Brand Manager
- Regional Brand Development Manager
- Regional Skin Care Director
- Global Brand Development Director for Vaseline
By 2010, he was the Global Brand Development VP for Dove Skin Cleansing and Care, overseeing significant campaigns and revitalizing the Vaseline brand.
He then transitioned to Burger King Corporation in 2014 as Head of Brand Marketing, later becoming the Global Chief Marketing Officer in October 2017. His ability to transform brand images and drive global advertising set him apart in this role. By January 2020, he took on the role of Global Chief Marketing Officer at Restaurant Brands International, focusing on modernizing brands like Burger King, Popeyes, and Tim Hortons.
Fernando continued his journey in the marketing sector by joining Activision Blizzard in April 2021 as Chief Marketing Officer. He led marketing initiatives for major gaming franchises such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and Candy Crush until April 2023.
Advisory Roles and Recent Endeavors
In addition to his substantial corporate roles, Fernando has held several advisory positions. Since April 2023, he has been a Board Member at Braze, a consumer engagement platform. He also serves as a Senior Marketing Advisor for NotCo, an AI-driven plant-based food technology startup.
Most recently, in October 2023, Fernando became an Operating Partner at Garnett Station Partners, where he advises on marketing strategies for brands in the fast-food, pet care, and service industries. In May 2024, he will assume the role of Brand Marketer Academy Dean at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, responsible for shaping the program’s agenda and coordinating events with top speakers.
