Educational Background
 
Starting with his education, Alvarez earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Harvard Law School, one of the most prestigious law schools in the world. Before that, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Services from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, laying a strong foundational knowledge that has served him well throughout his career.

 
Professional Journey
 
Alvarez's professional journey began as an Associate at Steel Hector & Davis LLP, where he worked from January 1982 to January 1985. He then moved to McConnell Valdés LLC, becoming a Partner and staying with the firm until January 1992. Demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit, Alvarez co-founded Pietrantoni Mendez & Alvarez LLC, a legal firm where he was a Founding Partner from August 1992 to June 2010.

 
Significant Chapter at Popular
 
The most significant chapter of his career began at Popular, one of Puerto Rico's leading financial institutions. He joined the company as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer in June 2010. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, becoming President and Chief Operating Officer in October 2014. In July 2017, he added the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to his responsibilities, and by May 2024, he had fully assumed the role.

During his tenure at Popular, Alvarez has overseen a vast array of strategic initiatives. He successfully guided the company through several growth phases, including the expansion of the auto finance business by acquiring Wells Fargo & Company’s auto business in Puerto Rico. Another notable achievement was executing a transaction to acquire key customer-facing channels from Evertec, propelling Popular's digital transformation and enhancing the customer experience.

One of Alvarez's standout leadership moments came following the catastrophic Hurricanes Irma and Maria, where he played an instrumental role in the swift recovery and restoration of operations. His leadership during these crises was pivotal in addressing the needs of customers, employees, and the broader community.
