Ivan embarked on his career with the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (USPIRG) where he served as a Senior Legislative Advocate from 1994 to 2005, also holding various roles within the PIRG network during this period. Noteworthy among his early career accomplishments, Ivan was the founder and board member of Youth Vote, focusing on increasing youth participation in elections and civic activities.

His career path took him through several influential positions, including Vice President at Grassroots Campaigns Inc., where he honed his skills in grassroots organizing and political campaigning.
