Jeffrey J. Hurd is a distinguished business leader with more than 20 years of experience across various functions, including human resources, operations, administration, communications, and legal affairs, largely within the insurance and financial services sectors. He currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Equitable Holdings, a financial services company based in New York.
Educational Background
Jeffrey's educational background is quite impressive. He obtained his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, graduating cum laude, from the prestigious New York University School of Law in the early 1990s. Before that, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Political Science, magna cum laude, from Union College.
Early Career
Early in his career, Jeffrey began as an associate at Morgan Lewis & Bockius, working primarily in corporate law, focusing on mergers and acquisitions, private equity, strategic investments, and joint ventures. He even spent a year in Tokyo working with the Japanese law firm Mori Sogo.
Rise at AIG
Jeffrey's career in the corporate world took off when he joined AIG. He started as Assistant General Counsel in 1998, quickly rising through the ranks to become Associate General Counsel by 1999. He demonstrated exceptional legal and administrative skills, managing various pivotal tasks within the organization. From 2003 to 2006, he led the Mergers & Acquisitions Group as Deputy General Counsel, overseeing AIG’s global acquisition and disposition activities.
Key Roles During Financial Crisis
In 2009, Jeffrey took on pivotal roles as the Chief Administrative Officer, Head of Asset Management Restructuring, and later, as CEO of AIG Global Real Estate. This period was crucial as he played a significant role in AIG’s restructuring during the financial crisis. He successfully led the carve-out and sale of AIG’s third-party asset management business and restructured its first-party asset management function.
Leading Human Resources Transformation
Jeffrey continued his ascent at AIG, being named Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer in 2010. Over the next six years, he led a major transformation of the Human Resources function, additionally overseeing Corporate Communications and Administration. During this phase, he managed over 2,000 employees with an annual budget exceeding $600 million.
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
In 2016, he became Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of AIG, where he managed Human Resources, Communications, and Administration, and led a newly formed Transformation Office. Jeffrey was responsible for overseeing a team of over 8,500 employees across multiple departments, managing a budget that topped $900 million.
COO at Equitable Holdings
Since January 2018, Jeffrey has been the COO of Equitable Holdings, where he is responsible for the strategic oversight of Human Resources, Information Technology, and Communications. He also leads the Transformation Office, which covers various critical areas including operations, data and analytics, procurement, and corporate real estate. Additionally, he serves on the board of AllianceBernstein, a subsidiary of Equitable Holdings.
