Early Life and Education
John McAvoy is a retired executive who has spent the bulk of his formidable career at Con Edison, a major utility company in New York. His journey started with a solid educational foundation. He earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Manhattan University, completing his studies in 1980. He continued to advance his knowledge and skills by obtaining an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business, graduating in 1987.
Career Beginnings
John began his professional career at Con Edison in 1980, where he held various operational roles that set the stage for his long-term success. Throughout his tenure, he took on increasingly significant responsibilities. By 2006, he became the Vice President of System and Transmission Operations. In this role, he managed critical aspects of the company’s infrastructure, ensuring efficient power distribution.
Progression to Senior Executive Roles
In 2009, John was promoted to Senior Vice President - Central Operations. Here, he oversaw the electric transmission system, substations, Energy Control Center, and power plants, among other critical systems. His role was pivotal in maintaining and strengthening Con Edison's infrastructure.
John’s leadership skills were recognized when he took on the role of President and CEO of Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc., a sister company to Con Edison, from January to November 2013. He returned to Con Edison later that year, ascending to the position of President and CEO in December 2013. In this top leadership role, John led the company for seven years, guiding it through numerous challenges and advancements.
Chairman of the Board
In May 2014, John also became the Chairman of the Board, further cementing his influence and leadership within the company. He served in this capacity until December 2021, demonstrating a consistent trajectory of upward mobility and accomplishment. After his tenure as Chairman, he remained on the board until May 2023.
