Over the years, he has climbed the ranks to become a prominent figure in banking and nonprofit organizations. Educational Background
Michael's educational background laid a solid foundation for his career. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from Eastern Michigan University, followed by a Master's degree in Finance and Financial Management Services from the University of Maryland Global Campus. To hone his leadership skills further, Michael participated in an Advanced Leadership Development Program at Babson College, completed a CEO Leadership Program at The Wharton School, and enrolled in a Digital Marketing Program at Columbia Business School.
Early Career at Citizens Financial Group
His career path began at Citizens Financial Group, where he held various leadership roles from 1993 to 2007. Michael managed sales, service, and operations for banking centers in Michigan and later oversaw profit and loss operations for 67 new banking centers in Indiana.
Roles at Capital One
In 2007, Pugh joined Capital One in the Washington D.C. Metro Area. He served as Group Vice President and National Residential Lending Manager, Senior Vice President and Call Center Consumer and Business Banking Director, and Senior Vice President and Regional Executive-Market President. In these roles, he led retail and business banking, revenue production, and community development initiatives across multiple states.
Leadership at Carver Federal Savings Bank
Michael transitioned to Carver Federal Savings Bank in 2012, where he served as Board Director, President, and CEO until September 2023. At Carver, he directed the bank's business priorities, provided strategic support, and oversaw various executive and Board committees.
Current Role at Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)
Since October 2023, Michael has been the President & CEO of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), where he oversees the organization's mission, vision, strategic direction, operations, fundraising, credit, policy matters, and financial results. He is a strong advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. In addition, he has been the Board Chairperson for Pursuit in New York since January 2017.
Additional Roles and Contributions
Michael also lends his expertise as an Independent Director at Elevate, a financial technology company based in Dallas, Texas. Despite the company's acquisition in March 2023, his influence and contributions during his tenure were significant.
In January 2024, Michael will take on the role of Adjunct Professor at St. John's University, The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, extending his influence to the academic world.
