Early Education and Career Beginnings
Bob Bakish began his educational journey at Columbia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Operations Research from Columbia Engineering, graduating in 1985. His passion for finance and management then led him to Columbia Business School, where he obtained an MBA in Finance in 1989.
Bakish's career took off at Booz Allen Hamilton, a leading management consulting firm. Here, he worked from 1990 to 1997, ultimately serving as Vice President and Partner. This role laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors in the media industry, honing his skills in management and strategic planning.
Tenure at Viacom
In 1997, Bakish joined Viacom, where he began a lengthy and prolific tenure. Starting as the Senior Vice President of Planning, Development, and Technology, he climbed the corporate ladder through various critical positions. By 2004, he was the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Operations and Viacom Enterprises.
In January 2007, Bakish's leadership qualities earned him the presidency of MTV Networks International. This role expanded his influence on a global scale, allowing him to enhance MTV's international footprint until January 2011. Subsequently, he became the President and CEO of Viacom International Media Networks, a position he held until November 2016.
Leadership at ViacomCBS and Paramount
Bakish's leadership spectrum widened when he was appointed President and CEO of Viacom in December 2016. During his tenure, he played an instrumental role in steering the company through evolving media landscapes. His efforts culminated in the merger of Viacom and CBS in December 2019, creating ViacomCBS. As the President and CEO, he led the newly formed entity until February 2022.
Post-merger, Bakish continued to shape the media industry as the President and CEO of Paramount, a position he held until April 2024. Under his leadership, the company experienced substantial growth, particularly in its creative assets and streaming services. He successfully integrated the distinct cultures of Viacom and CBS, fostering a unified company dedicated to strategic expansion and innovation in streaming platforms.
Board Memberships and Legacy
Bob Bakish's achievements extend beyond his executive roles. He is a key figure on several boards, including AVID Technologies and his alma mater's institutions—Columbia Business School and Columbia's School of Engineering and Applied Science.
