Robin Mackie is a seasoned executive with a rich background in engineering, technical fields, and project management. He began his formal education at Kearsney College, where he completed his matriculation from 1970 to 1977. He then furthered his studies in Mechanical Engineering, earning a BSc from the University of KwaZulu-Natal between 1977 and 1979. Continuing his educational journey, Robin attended Northumbria University from 1980 to 1984, where he also obtained a BSc in Mechanical Engineering.

 
Professional Career
 
Robin's career is marked by a series of significant roles across various sectors, including offshore, engineering, construction, medical, and automotive industries.

  • His first professional position was as a Productivity Improvement Manager at British Ship Builders from 1980 to 1983.
  • He then became the Group Design and Development Manager at PCT Group, managing material handling projects for oil production platforms from 1983 to 1989.

 
Key Roles in the Early 1990s
 

  • In the early 1990s, Robin worked as a contractor for TML (Trans Manche Link), focusing on managing tunnel boring machines during the Channel Tunnel project.
  • He then served as the Development and Operations Director at APT Ltd, leading a management buyout and concentrating on down-hole tooling design and development from 1992 to 1998.

 
Leadership in Automotive and Oil & Gas Sectors
 

  • Robin's expertise expanded into the role of Director of Design and Development at Express Group, overseeing major projects in the automotive and oil & gas sectors from 1998 to 2002.
  • He later took on the role of Managing Director at The Fits Together Group, where he led new product development and low volume manufacturing solutions until 2005.

 
Consultancy and Medical Field
 

  • Next, Robin served as a Consultant Service Design for One North East, working on regional service design projects between 2003 and 2005.
  • He transitioned to the medical field as the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at EVO Medical from 2005 to 2008, focusing on respiratory market products and regulatory compliance.

 
Electric Vehicle Innovation
 
Robin then moved into electric vehicle innovation as the President and CTO of Smith Electric Vehicles from 2009 to 2016, leading technical teams and managing projects funded by the Department of Energy. Concurrently, he held a long-term position as Chairman of the Board of Governors at Gateshead College, driving its transformation to an Ofsted Outstanding College from 2001 to 2018.

 
Current Endeavors
 
Robin also founded The Mackies Partnership UK, providing consultancy for numerous companies including Ideanomics, LiveWork, and Tevva Motors. His leadership and strategic oversight at Ideanomics led to his roles as President from 2021 to 2023 and his current position as Chief Operating Officer starting from January 2023.
